Known as the Venice of the North, Amsterdam is a wonderful place, it’s a beautiful city with an amazing history and tons of culture. Canals permeate the city creating an amazingly calm and relaxed atmosphere wherever you are in Amsterdam. It’s easy to hire a boat and drift around the city, seeing the sights or simply sit in a cafe and watch the river traffic go by.
There are many reasons to visit the Dutch capital: delicious stroopwafel, historic 16th century architecture, and romantic canals. Still not convinced? Take a look at these five reasons why you should visit amazing Amsterdam.
1. Museums
Amsterdam is drenched in history so it’s no surprise that you’ll find some of the best museums and galleries in Europe here, including the famous Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum in Museum Square. Containing over 200 paintings, 500 drawings and letters from Van Gogh, it’s the largest collection of the artist’s work in the world – and well worth a visit.
2. Canals
Amsterdam isn’t called the “Venice of the North” for nothing – the city has 165 canals spanning more than 60 miles (and 1281 bridges – three times that of Venice!) Built during the 17th century when Amsterdam was a small fishing town, the canal ring was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010. Cruising Amsterdam’s canals, whether by private boat or traditional canal cruise, is a must-do.
3. Beer
Beer lovers won’t be disappointed with the Netherlands, which happens to be the world’s largest exporter of beer. In Amsterdam, see the home of Heineken and learn all about the well-known lager at the Heineken Experience, an interactive tour through the former brewery.
4. Flowers
With tulips being the Netherlands’ national flower, you can expect to see them all over the city. Head to Keukenhof, only 30 mins away from the city, a famous flower show which runs between March-May. For something a little closer, Tulip Island in Vondelpark is an annual tulip display from July-September. Finally, a trip to the floating flower market really is a must: the Bloemenmarkt is present all year round on the canal.
5. Cycling
Bikes are a big deal in Amsterdam. If you want to explore the city like a local there really is no other way than to hire a bike. There are many bike hire companies you can use, which are easy to find and affordable. If you fancy a little structure to your bike exploration then you can also take on a bike tour of the city.
